About Philadelphia Airport & Nearby Hotels:
Philadelphia International Airport (IATA: PHL, ICAO: KPHL, FAA LID: PHL) is a major airport in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is the largest airport in the Delaware Valley region and in Pennsylvania.
The airport is the second largest hub and the primary international hub of US Airways and has service to destinations in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.
Most of the airport property is located in Philadelphia proper. The international terminal and the western end of the airfield are located in Tinicum Township, Delaware County.
Philadelphia International Airport PHL is located about seven miles from downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is accessible via Interstates Hwys. 95 (Delaware Expwy) & I-76, PA 291 & 611, and from PA & NJ Turnpikes.
The Airport, bordering to the south on the Delaware River, and is served by the Airport High-Speed Rail Line stopping at Eastwick Station, University City, 38th Street Station, Penn Center Suburban Station and Market East Station. PHL Airport ranks very high among large U.S. airports in customer satisfaction.
With four runways and an estimated 31 million passengers a year, Philadelphia International Airport is a major international and domestic hub for US Airways, and is served by major U.S. airlines offering domestic and international nonstop and connecting flights to desinations around the world.
On-Airport Hotels at PHL Airport: The Airport Marriott, next to Parking Garage B (215-492-9000), and the Aloft Hotel on Island Avenue (267-298-1700).
While Philadelphia Airport has made countless improvements in recent years to its infrastructure, to the runways, parking lot and terminals, starting in 2011, it will now embark on a 13-year, $5.2 billion project that will extend two of the runways, add a new runway, and add two new passenger terminals – the first terminal to occupy the site of present terminals A through F – and the second one will be right across from it.
The current passenger terminal complex at Philadelphia International Airport includes six Terminals A-West, A-East, B, C, D & F and offers acess to corresponding Garages.
Note that distances between the terminals can be long, even with courtesy shuttles running between Terminals – therefore budget in an extra 30 minutes if you need to connect from an international flight to a regional one.
However, as all but Terminal F are connected at post-security areas, transfer passengers do not need to re-enter security checks.
Terminal A-West of Philadelphia International houses an International Arrivals Hall and a Customs hall connected to A-West Ticketing with Concourse A-West and gates A14-A26 on one end, and Concourse A-East on the other. Terminal A-West is the only one with US Immigration & Customs, and serves all international flights except those with U.S. pre-clearance facilities. Currently British Airways, Lufthansa & US Airways (Int’l) use this terminal. Aside from Food & drink establishments & shops, Travelex currency exchange, Information services and XpresSpa are available.
Terminal A-East of Philadelphia International shares ticketing with Terminal A-West and is mostly used for domestic flights with Concourse A-East and gates A1-A13 (the USO facility is near A6). A connector from Terminal A-East Ticketing leads to the Baggage Claim A-East, and to the terminal connector to Terminal B/C. Currently Air Jamaica, American & American Eagle, Frontier, USA 3000 & Charters use this terminal.
Aside from food & drink establishments & shops, there is an Aviation Play Station, information services, Magic shoeshine, Travelex currency exchange, check-cashing, UPS store & USO.
Terminals B & C of Philadelphia International are the two main US Airways terminals, connected by a shopping mall and a food court. They house B/C ticketing and connect to Concourse B with gates B1-B16 on one side and to gates C16-C18 on the other with connections to the Baggage Claim B/C and to the Terminal Connector to Terminal D. Currently, both Terminals B & C are served by US Airways. Aside from food & drink establishments & shops, there is an information service and an XpressSpa.
Terminal D of Philadelphia International is connected to Terminal E on the Ticketing level, and both terminals share the connected baggage claim D/E. Concourse D has gates D1-D16 and houses at its end a Kids Aviation Play Station. Terminal D also connects to Terminal B/C’s shopping area through a post-security walkway. Currently Air Canada, AirTran, Continental/ Continental Express, Delta /Delta Connection & United Airlines /United Express use this terminal. NOTE: Delta’s ticketing is in TE, while gates and baggage claim are in TD; AirTran’s ticketing is in TD and baggage claim & gates are in TE. Aside from food & drink establishments & shops, therres an informtation service, Magic ShoeShine, a Play Station, a massage point, Travelex currency exchange, InMotion Entertainment, & Lids/ Kids.
Terminal E of Philadelphia International shares ticketing & concessions with Terminal D, and a link between baggage claims D & E. It has Concourse E with gates E1-E17. Currently AirTran, Delta /Delta Connection & Southwest use this terminal. Aside from food & drink establishments & shops, there is Information service, InMotion Entertainment, & Lids/Kids.
Terminal F of Philadelphia International on the North side of the Terminal Complex has Terminal F Ticketing with attached Baggage Claim F and a Terminal Connector to Terminal E, as well as access to Concourses 1, 3 and 2, with gates F1-F39 (Concourse 3 is in the center pointing northwards). Currently only US Airways Express uses this terminal. Aside from food & drink establishments & a newsstand it has information services and a shoeshine.
Other Amenities and services inside the passenger terminals include: Free internet access; ATM machines, currency exchange (tel. 215-492-8880), food & drink establishments and shops (recently awarded ‘Best Concession Management Team’), USO center (215-365-8889), Nanny Caddy vending machines(at TB gate B5 and TC Gate C19 – stocked with diapers, formulas, etc.), seven ‘Pet Ports’ near the Departures & Arrivals roads and close to the baggage claim & ticketing area, as well as:
For Hearing & Speech-Impaired Travelers: (The ADA Information line at U.S.Dot is 1-800-514-0301, TDD 1-800-514-0383).
PHL Airport has recently installed 140 large, easy-to-read, LCD monitors throughout its seven terminals that visually providing public address information. As with the audio announcements, visual messages can be presented in English, Spanish, French and German. In addition it now has a Video Relay Service. A web camera allows passengers to interact with an American Sign Language translator relaying the message to the caller’s intended recipient and then translating the response back into sign language for the caller.
Translation Relay Service or TRS–another option–is a text-based method that allows callers to use a keyboard. As with VRS, a translator relays both the caller’s message and the recipient’s response. This free service in English and Spanish is located near Gate C-16 in Terminal C–with a second video phone in Terminal F.
If you need to pick up a passenger at Philadelphia Airport, use the free Cell Phone Lot which is accessible via the Arrivals Ramp from I-95, and from Route 291 – past the Terminal A/B parking garage, off Garage Entrance Road – and its exit leads directly to the baggage claim. Stay with your car until your party has collected luggage and calls you to be picked up at the curb. You can also use the fee-based short-term parking option at all parking garages.
Other Parking options at Philadelphia International include over 17,000 spaces in: Garages A West & A East-B, Garage C, Garage D, Garage E-F, and the Economy Parking lot with free shuttle services.
(a) Short-Term Parking is available on the ground level of the garages (no overnight parking).
(b) Long-Term Parking is available in all Parking Garages opposite their passenger terminals.
(c) Economy Parking is available in the remote outside lot past Terminal F, and is served by blue & white shuttle buses running 24/7. Height restriction in the Garages is under 6 fee; if you park under 24 hrs use the ground level; otherwise park in the Economy lot.
Frequent Southwest flyers out of PHL using either Terminals A or F, may want to consider parking above level 3 of garages C or D, then go to the new TSA checkpoint, which has a separate Southwest Business Select line.
